The Union Flag, also known as the Union Jack, is the flag of the United Kingdom. It is composed of the union of three flags: St. George's Cross (the national flag of England), St. Andrew's Cross (the national flag of Scotland), St. Patrick's Cross (the national flag of Northern Ireland). The red dragon, the national flag of Wales, is not part of the Union Jack because when the first Union Flag was created Wales was already united with England. There are many versions of the origin of the name of the flag. However, it probably refers to the fact that small flags used on ships to show their nationalities are called “jacks”.
