St. Mary's University Mission St. Mary’s University, as a Catholic Marianist University, fosters the formation of people in faith and educates leaders for the common good through community, integrated liberal arts and professional education, and academic excellence. Characteristics of Marianist Education

  • Educate for formation in faith
  • Provide an integral quality education
  • Educate in the family spirit
  • Educate for service, justice, and peace
  • Educate for adaptation and change
St. Mary's University Tradition The Marianist family of lay and religious communities was founded by Fr. William Joseph Chaminade in the first decades of the nineteenth century. It grew up as a response in faith to the French Revolution and to the forces that were shaping the new world from which the Revolution came. Marianist life and educational vision, then and today, creates new and unique ways of responding to and participating in the modern world for the transformation of the human community in light of the Gospel. Although deeply rooted in Catholic tradition, our charism is at home in the contemporary world. When we approach the five Characteristics of Marianist Education through the history and stories of our unique Marianist tradition we see them engaging the needs and challenges of modern life in dynamic and transformative ways.

Formation in Faith

HOME

To reduce the individual human being to a unit in a category, whether that is a consumer, a producer, an object or anything else is to deny the transcendent value of the human person. Fr. Chaminade saw that reductionism at work in the physical and spiritual violence that sometimes marred the Revolution and the following century. He believed that diminishment was fundamentally anti-human and that only a life and education grounded on belief in the God who created humanity in the Divine Image could remake the human community. After the Revolution, Fr. Chaminade returned to Bordeaux ready to participate in the rebuilding of the church and society. He initiated conversations about the Church, faith and the future with people on every level of the community. In those conversations he raised questions about where God was found during the time of social upheaval and about the individual’s role in transforming society. Those questions echoed the search of that new world for purpose and faith, and the need for authentic conversation about constructive change. Formation in Faith is foundational to Marianist education.

Excellence in Education

HOME

During the Revolution, the mob became an instrument of social change. For those with the skill to manipulate popular discontent the crowd became a means for gaining power. But for those who were drawn to a mass movement, crowd membership could lead to an abdication of independent thought and responsibility. Fr. Chaminade believed that the most important goals of education were to train the minds of the young in critical thinking and in true Christian humanism. Those were the foundations that would enable men and women to grow in authentic freedom and individuality in the face of the “mob think” that was part of his world and is still with us. Excellence in education develops truly free thinkers in the best sense of that term and advocates integrated learning that appreciates all avenues of knowledge.

Family Spirit

HOME

To counter the weight of mass movements and “mob think”, Fr. Chaminade brought people together into small communities of faith and mission where respect for the ideas and needs of individual members was grounded in the appreciation for each one created in God’s image. Beginning at Bordeaux in 1800, Fr. Chaminade brought together men and women from every class, level of education and socio-economic level. These small communities, meeting weekly for prayer and discussion, offered their members the mutual support of faith and friendship, while serving the mission of bringing Christ to the world after the model of Mary. In a world of mass movements and media, Marianist family spirit fosters the individual in a community of faith, concern for the individual and commitment to mission.

Service, Justice, & Peace

HOME

Pre-Revolutionary France was cruel in the inequity and injustice that its socio-economic and political structure enforced. Fr. Chaminade recognized that evil and supported the movement of reform that the early Revolution encouraged. Although he parted ways with the Revolution as it evolved into a more radical and violent movement, he held to the conviction that the new world he hoped to build would be based on a commitment to service and the works of justice and peace. The Marianist tradition of service is devoted to creating a more just and peaceful society for all.

Adaptation & Change

HOME

Fr. Chaminade learned from the cultural explosion of the Revolution the importance of paying close attention to the signs of the time. The violence and destruction that the Revolution brought on many fronts at different times was often unexpected and uncontrollable. The Founder believed that educating people in Christian humanism to be critically aware of the present and also to be forward looking to the future would equip men and women to have a greater role in shaping that future. Education to adaptation and change prepares men and women to thoughtfully and faithfully respond to the signs of the times.
