Deeper Learning Defined
Deper learning is defined as the "mastery of content that engages students in critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and self-directed learning." (William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, 2018). Deeper learning is also characterized by being able to take the information learned and apply it tacross multiple situations (Harsh & Young, 2015).

- Problem solving rooted in real-life problems- Connecting learning to previous knowledge- Provide tools to encourage effective communication- Allow students to set goals, track their progress, and reflect (Kabaker, 2018)
Research
Research has shown that the use of deeper learning approaches, such as problem solving, teamwork, and deep engagment has improved learning outcomes for students in STEM courses (Gomoll, Hmelo-Silver, Tolar, Sebanovic & Francisco, 2017.)A second study showed that having varied learning environments in the classroom also had a positive effect on student achievement (Harsh & Young, 2015)A
