Food
Spain stands out for its diversity and natural wealth. It is the country with the most biodiversity in the European Union. It is estimated that there are some 500 endemic species in the Canary Islands and about 1,700 endemisms in the peninsula.
There are several factors that explain the abundance of species in Spain compared to other countries in Europe: • Geographical situation: The peninsula, due to its geographical location, has very varied climates. Large areas of Spain have a Mediterranean and even arid climate, others have it humid and others are areas of transition. • Mountainous relief: The abundance of mountains, some with perpetual snow, increase the number of habitats and add high mountain climate zones to the previous ones. • Canary Islands: The flora and fauna of the Canary Islands is totally different from that of the peninsula, because of its climate and because the islands have an abundance of endemic species. • Delay in economic development: Industrialization and economic development in Spain have been slower than in other European countries, which has allowed keeping large natural areas better preserved.
