Soil as a resource

Soil is the basis of life on Earth it is the interface between the planet´s four subsystems

Earth´s subsystems

Hydrosphere

Geosphere

Atmosphere

Biosphere

We can find water in soil.

Soil is used for creating rocks and minerals

Between the atmosphere and soil there is a exchange of gases.

Living things live in the soil.

Uses of soil

·Agriculture·Building·Medicine

Agriculture

Soil has vital nutrients for plants. As a result, it is used in agriculture to nourish plants. The roots of a plant receive nutrients from the soil to help it grow.

Building

Soil is an important part of the building process. Soil compaction, which increases the density of the soil, is done as part of the building process. The purpose of the compaction is to improve the load support. Soil can also be used as building materials such as adobe and red bricks.

Medicine

Soil is commonly used in antibiotics. Microbes created in the soil are harmful to bacteria, which is why soil is used in medicine. Medicines created by soil include skin ointments, tuberculosis drugs and anti-tumor drugs.

Types of soil

Sandy soil

Chalky soil

Clay soil

Sandy Soil

The sandy soil is dry and light in nature. It doesn´t have moisture content and warms up quickly in the spring. It is a good type for the production of early crops.

Clay soil

The clay soil is wet for nature and it is the best type for autumn planting. This soil is excellent for the dry season, because it has a high water retention quality.

Chalky soil

The chalky soil is alkine in nature and usually poor in nutrients. It requires nourishment, in the form of additional nutrients and soil improvers. The soil becomes dry in summers, and it requires to much of watering for the plants to grow. One advantage is that it has its lime content.

Solutions

Soil Degradation

- Overgrazing, - Monoculture planting,- Erosion,- Soil compaction, - Overexposure to pollutants,- Land-use conversion .

- keeping soils in good conditions,- Reducing deforestation- Curb industrial farming,- Preventing salinization,- Conservation tillage.

- Heavy metals,- Pesticides,- Salts,- Groundwater pollution.

VS

- Reduction of human impact, - Wetland restoration, - Agricultural best practices, -Reduce waste- Reduce pollution
