PLOT

Tom is a boy who is almost always in trouble and who lives with his Aunt Polly and his half-brother, Sid, in the Mississippi River town of St. Petersburg, Missouri. His adventures begin when he sees a new boy in town, and as he dislikes that he had a smart look of a boy from the city, he fought against him. When he turned back home that night, his aunt grounded him and so, the next day he would have to paint the fence, which was a housework easy for him as he managed to make his friends help to paint it. Some days later, he meets Becky Thatcher, who he fell in love with and who he persuades to get engaged to him. After that, Tom's friend Huck Finn suggested him to go to the graveyard with a dead cat as he said that when the devil comes to take a bad person away, it is thrown the cat after them and there are no sign of any wart. That night, they went at the graveyard and there, they found Dr Robinson, Injun Joe and Muff Potter, who was drunk. They stayed there for some minutes, then they fought between them and Joe murdered Dr Robinson and blamed Potter, who was arrested the next day. The boys promised not to tell anyone the truth or they were in trouble with Joe. As Tom seemed depressed because of what happened in the graveyard, his aunt gave him a pain-killer, which wasn't needed.

PLOT

Another adventure happens when Huck, Tom and their friend Joe Harper decide to go to an island and become pirates. They stayed there for three days and nights, they became aware that the community is sounding the river for their bodies and Tom persuades his friends to appear at their funeral. They did it and were admirated by all their friends.Muff Potter’s trial begins, and Tom testifies against Injun Joe, who flees the courtroom through a window. On summer, Huck and Tom go hunting for buried treasure in a haunted house. Inside the house, they see Injun Joe enter the house disguised as a deaf and mute Spaniard. They were planning to bury some stolen treasure. By an coincidence, Injun Joe and his partner find a buried box of gold themselves. When they see Tom and Huck’s tools, they become suspicious that someone is sharing their hiding place and carry the gold off instead of reburying it.

PLOT

Huck runs after Injun Joe every night. Meanwhile, Tom goes on a picnic to McDougal’s Cave with Becky and their classmates. That same night, Huck sees Injun Joe and his partner and he overhears their plans to attack the Widow Douglas. Mrs Douglas had been kind to Huck, so he went to Mr Jones and warned him. Tom and Becky get lost in the cave. The men of the town begin to search for them, but they don't get found. Tom and Becky run out of food and candles and begin to weaken. When Tom is looking for a way out of the cave, sees Injun Joe who is hidden there. Lastly, Tom finds a way out of the cave. Moreover, Becky’s father, Judge Thatcher, locks up the cave. Injun Joe, trapped inside, starves to death. A week later, Tom takes Huck to the cave and they find the box of gold, with two thousand dollars inside. The Widow Douglas adopts Huck, and, when Huck tries to escape civilized life, Tom promises him that if he returns to Mrs Douglas, he can join Tom’s robber band. Finally, Huck agrees.

PERSONAL OPINION

Wholeheartedly, I have enjoyed reading this book, which show us themes like friendship, bravery, courage, loyalty... The character I've most liked is Tom, which is the main character. He has a different way of thinking from other youngsters. I believe “The adventures of Tom Sawyer” is a great book to read for anyone who loves classic stories. Even though at the beginning, it seemed to me a rather uninteresting book, eventually I have really liked it.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mark Twain

Samuel Longhorne Clemens more known as Mark Twain was born in the little town of Florida, Missouri, in 1835. When Twain was about four, his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri. His father was a lawyer and his mother was known to be particularly fond of animals and unfortunate human beings. Although the family was not wealthy, Twain apparently had a happy and secure childhood. At the age of twelve, Twain's father died and for the next ten years, he was an apprentice printer and then a printer both in Hannibal and in New York City. He was hopeful to find his fortune, so he decided to make his fortune in South America. On a riverboat to New Orleans, he met a famous riverboat pilot who promised to teach him the trade for five hundred dollars. After that, Twain piloted riverboats along the Mississippi for four years. In 1861, Twain served for a short period of time with the Confederate Army, and then travelled west to Nevada and California. He worked as a journalist in San Francisco, until 1867, when he came back to New York City. In 1870, he married Olivia Langdon and settled in Hartford, Connecticut. Then, in 1876, he published The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Mark Twain, one of America's first and foremost realists and humanists, was born in 1835 during the appearance of Haley's Comet, and he died during the next appearance of Haley's Comet, 75 years later.
