Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge
Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) is the teacher's ability to combine and apply all other types of knowledge with an understanding of their students' prior knowledge and learning context and to facilitate impactful learning.
Pedagogical Content Knowledge
The teacher's knowledge of the most appropriate pedagogical methods and approaches to teach specific content elements.
Technological Content Knowledge
The teacher's knowledge of how specific technologies relate to the content and subject matter to be taught / learned.
Technological Pedagogical Knowledge
The teacher's knowledge of how learning can change when particular technologies are applied in different ways.
TPACK
TPACK combines these primary types of knowledge to create four more.
Click on the titles to find out more about each one.
"TPACK is different from knowledge of all three concepts individually. Instead, TPACK is the basis of effective teaching with technology, requiring an understanding of the representation of concepts using technologies; pedagogical techniques that use technologies in constructive ways to teach content; knowledge of what makes concepts difficult or easy to learn and how technology can help redress some of the problems that students face; knowledge of students’ prior knowledge and theories of epistemology; and knowledge of how technologies can be used to build on existing knowledge to develop new epistemologies or strengthen old ones."

Reflect on your teaching
Think about your own attempts to implement educational technology with your students.
Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge
- Think about the six fields of knowledge that comprise TPACK. Rate youself from 1 - 10 on each. Which do you feel most / least confident about?
- How do you think you can improve your weaker areas of knowledge?
- How useful do you think the TPACK model is in helping you to use technology with your students?
- How could you use it as a framework to train other teachers?
- What role could it play in helping you to evaluate the potential of digital tools and resources?
- Do a search and find out more about TPACK.
