THE GLOBAL VILLAGE
A village is known as a village located in a rural area, which has a very small number of dwellings and inhabitants. Global, for its part, is that which belongs to the globe or a set.
THE GLOBAL VILLAGE
Global village
The idea of a global village was developed by the Canadian Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980). This Canadian sociologist and philosopher played with two terms that seem contradictory (the village is somewhat local, small scale, while global refers to the entire world) to explain the consequences of mass media development.
Marshall McLuhan
His theory might be that for McLuhan, planet Earth became a kind of huge village because people, thanks to television, radio and other media, can always know what happens anywhere. In this way, the entire Humanity functions as a village, where the villagers can find out what happens immediately thanks to the small size of the environment where they live.
The Global village
The global village thus implies the disappearance of physical distances in order to generate knowledge. The immense flow of available information, on the other hand, implies that people access only a small part: that which cut and decide to show the mass media.
