A bit of Geography.....
Australia is the biggest island and the 6th biggest country in the world! Also it's one of the 14 countries in Oceania.
During Prehistory, Australia and Papua New Guinea were linked together and therefore evolving at the same pace, until around 10,000 years ago, when the level of the sea raised and separated them.

SOME FACTS...
The capital city is CANBERRA, but Sydney is the most populated city.
"OZ is the popular name for Australia and "Aussie" is the way Australian people are commonly known.
If you want to see an animated map of Australian colonies evolved throughout the time, click here. Moreover, NZ was part of NSW until the XIXth century.
AND A BIT OF HISTORY....
Between 1788 and 1868, about 162,000 convicts were transported by the British government to various penal colonies in Australia, like Port Arthur Penitentiary, in Tasmania. Incredibly, today it has one of the lowest crime rates in the world!
Although some Spanish and Portuguese sailors had already spotted Australia, they kept it secret, thinking it was another smaill island. Captain James Cook was the first one to set foot on it, officially discovering Australia in the XVIIIth century and soon after it the British established a penal colony over there.
ABORIGINAL PEOPLE
In the XVIIIth Century the first colonists arrived, they were ships full of prisoners..... and with them chickenpox, smallpox, measles, influenza, tuberculosis... and, in the XIXth Century, also tobacco, alcohol and opium. All that, together with the violence towards them and the robbery of their land almost ended with them.
Nowadays, some laws have given some territories back to them, but the effects of what they did to them are still devastating
Aboriginal art
Aboriginal music
Aboriginal sport
The Aboriginals believe that the entire world was made by their Ancestors way back in the very beginning of time, the DREAMTIME. The Ancestors made everything: The Aboriginal people, the rocks, mountains, rivers, creeks, waterholes, plants and animals.
They believe that every person essentially exists eternally in the "Dreaming". This eternal part existed before the life of the individual begins, and continues to exist when the life of the individual ends

Very weird laws....
You cannot dress up as Robin or Batman
Wearing hot pink pants is illegal after midday on a Sunday
Walking on the right hand side of the road in Australia is illegal, even if you are walking on a footpath
Bars are supposed to have a stable, water and they should feed the horses that come with patrons
Aussies love going on barefoot
YO. Essentially, this means you can bring in your own bottle of wine for a couple of quid.
Australians will call everyone mate, whether they know them or not. Do not, however, assume that being called "mate" means they like you. There is key nuance in how long the letter 'a' is stretched out for. If it's a "maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate" rolling on for seemingly eons, they love you. If it's a short, sharp "mate", they might be about to punch you.
The classic Aussie greeting: "G’day, mate!"
