Sounds dramatic, but it just might be true. 12. Using Web-2tools effectively Not allweb-2 tools are useful or effective. It is worth reading reviews on the toolsyou’re interested in. Try one with your learners and get feedback on their effectiveness. 13. Connecting with other educators both in person and online. Sharingand collaboration are two concepts that are in the core of ELP profession.Learning from each other and growing together are the values of a sharedculture. There is always a lot to learn from each other and whether there is atraining or professional development unit in an institution, teachers cancreate opportunities to meet regularly and to inform each other about thematerials or tools they find useful for professional development. In the use oftechnology, teachers or learners may have more to share than many trainers whoseem to have the responsibility for institutional development. Creatingopportunities in the form of mini conferences or voluntary sessions is usuallyvery influential in creating interest among teachers. “Digital literacy is the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills.” The American Library Association’s digital-literacy task force Digital literacy has three aspects: 1) finding and consuming digital content; 2) creating digital content; and 3) communicating or sharing it. Hiller Spires, North Carolina State University Digital literacy refers to an individual's ability to find, evaluate, and compose clear information through writing and other media on various digital platforms. Digital literacy is evaluated by an individual's grammar, composition, typing skills and ability to produce text, images, audio and designs using technology. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Developing Digital Literacy SkillsDigital literacy refers to a particular set of competencies that allow you to function and participate fully in a digital world. Students, nowadays, are generally considered to be digital natives; able to use technology effectively and easily. However, it is equally important to teach students how to become digital citizens. A digital citizen acts appropriately and ethically in an online environment. They must be able to resolve conflicts, source material ethically and interact with the wider world in a responsible manner. The source suggests that Digital literacy includes but not limited to

  • Practical technical skills
  • Collaboration skills
  • Social and cultural skills
  • Critical thinking skills

The following ten guiding principles for teaching with technology serve as a resource for educators integrating technology into any type of course – distance learning, hybrid, or traditional face-to-face classroom.

  1. Focus on pedagogy, not technology.
  2. Set expectations clearly.
  3. Choose high-quality over high-tech.
  4. More technology requires more organization.
  5. Accommodate before you innovate.
  6. Appeal to multiple styles of learning.
  7. Don’t let technology make you mechanical.
  8. Use technology to teach, not entertain.
  9. To legitimize, you need to personalize. Cheating and plagiarism are very legitimate concerns.
  10. Prepare for technology to fail. The reality is that technology does not always work.
The bottom line is to use the technology you feel most comfortable with and that best supports the learning environment and outcomes for your course. Submitted by: Roger Brown
